Thermal transfer paper is a type of specialty paper used in thermal transfer printing, which is a method of printing that involves transferring a design onto a substrate (material to be printed on) using heat and pressure. This process is distinct from direct thermal printing, where no ribbon or transfer paper is used, and the image is printed directly onto the material.
In thermal transfer printing, the design is first printed onto the thermal transfer paper, which is coated with a wax or resin-based ink. This paper, also known as a thermal transfer ribbon or TTR, acts as a carrier for the ink. The side of the paper coated with ink faces the substrate during printing. When heat and pressure are applied via a thermal print head, the ink melts and transfers from the paper to the substrate, creating a high-quality, durable image.
Thermal transfer paper (or ribbons) comes in different types depending on the application and durability requirements. The main types are:
1. **Wax Ribbons:** Best for standard printing on paper materials, offering good quality for general use. 2. **Wax/Resin Ribbons:** A mix of wax and resin provides more durability than pure wax ribbons and can be used on synthetic materials. 3. **Resin Ribbons:** These are the most durable, resistant to chemicals and abrasions, suitable for harsh environment labeling on synthetic materials.
Thermal transfer printing is widely used in various applications such as barcode labels, clothing tags, outdoor signage, and more due to its durability and ability to print on different materials.
